I was born and raised on Sickle Street, and my children were raised on Sickle St.. What a wonderful place it was to live. Everyone looked out for each other. The store owners knew your name and your family. There I met the love of my life and let him get away much to my dismay. I now live on Long Island and every time I drive through Inwood I relive my younger years and wish I had just one do-over. All the neighbors looked out for everybodies kids. It was truly home to me, Easter Sunday we went to the Cloisters in Ft. Tryon Park for picture taking. Summer was Miramar Pool, it was the greatest growing-up years anyone could ask for..

Lived in 115 &;119 Post Avenue from '38 to '52 when I graduated from GSS and joined the Christian
Brothers who taught in GSS at the time. I still belong to the Order. Growing up in Inwood was a terrific
experience and we used to play on the "White Rocks" which were located on Nagel between Post and
10th Aves. Many parents made the "White Rocks" off-limits...too dangerous. We had fun!!
I have not seen Inwood in decades, but the memories last and last along with the names and faces. My
brother, Bob, (now deceased) taught in GSS for many years before the school closed.
Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me...see email address above. Great memories...
many thanks.

These were absolutely wonderful to see. I moved from Inwood in 1968, and have seen the slow, downhill progression of Inwood. I live in Cali now, but got a chance to go back to the neighborhood in Summer of 09. A friend and I drove in from Ohio, and stayed out in Merrick, NY with a mutual friend. I wanted to show off the neighborhood, but all I kept saying was that it is definitely not the same. Even my church/school is gone. St. Matthews Lutheran, was the oldest Missouri Synod Church, located on the corner of Sherman and 204th. It was a great place in which to grow up, but it will never be the same. Now it just looks like a graffiti pit. Thank you so much for bringing back the memories of this wonderful neighborhood for me.

I was born in Inwood.....Lived at 76 Thayer St.....Attended OLQM, SHM and the Assissium....Married and moved to 4791 Broadway
where my daughters were born.....built a home in Kent Cliffs, NY and then moved South....to NC.....where I am now residing.
Inwood has to most wonderful memories for me....Out all day long playing....almost forgetting about lunch.....but once the lamp lights
clicked on......we played Hide & Seek in the cellars and dark alleyways.
Fort Tryon Park....another beautiful memory.....Cloisers and playing ping pong on the Terrace.
All the stores on Dyckman St. were fantastic. Alpine & Lowe's Theaters both on Dyckman.....showed 2 movies, the latest news, cartoons, and coming attractions.....all for $.25.......which we got by collecting bottles.
Bickford's, Cushmans, Mae Moon, Richmans Clothing Store.....F W Woolworths,, you name it....Dyckman St had it.
It was the BEST OF THE BEST Growing up in this wonderful neighborhood......
How I miss the old days.........but thank God for memories.

I am trying to find information about Edwin H. Strand who gave his 1940 address as 57 Park Terrace West. NY City, NY.
He was arriving from Bombay, India aboard the President Garfield.
He was working for an oil company. Probably Standard Oil as a geophysicist.
Was this apartment owned by Standard Oil or an oil company, or by Strand? Where did he go from here?
He was single and age 37.
Eleanor Smith became his wife later on.
Any information would be helpful.
Regards and thank you, JIM

I grew up in Inwood too - at 110 Post Avenue. Looking at these photos was a joy; so many old memories. I vividly recall playing stickball and "king and queen" outside of my building. Does anyone recall the snowstorm that covered the tops of the cars? (circa 1950s) We walked on top of them for days.

Thank you for an amazing trip back home. I grew up at 3736 10th Avenue, in the Dyckman Projects. I was born in 1949 and lived there from 1950-1967. Right here on the wall in my study, I've got my 9th grade JHS 52 class picture. So exciting to read about and see pictures of that school and my old neighborhood. It was a great place to grow up. I cannot thank you enough for putting this up. I learned a lot.

I lived at 128 Seaman Avenue in Inwood with my parents and 8 younger sisters. I attended Good Shepherd School - graduated in 1962 and then St. Simon Stock HS, Class of 1966. I now live in New Hampshire and have been married for 42 years to a Highbridge "boy", Kevin Joyce. I had such a wonderful educational experience, that I eventually became an educator myself - a high school Social Studies teacher and Assistant Principal in NH.
Our daughter was born in Inwood and still remembers Joe's Snack Shack....I have wonderful memories of my childhood there. I wish those neighborhoods still existed for my 3 grandchildren....Thank you for sharing these great times with us!
