The far west end of Dyckman Street, along the Hudson River, is now home to the popular concert venue La Marina, but if a proposed 1960’s development had been built you wouldn’t recognize the place today.
This never-constructed project, seen in renderings housed in the New York Municipal Archives, was to have been a grand riverfront complex.
Welcome to “Marina City, NYC.”
These 1964 renderings by architectural and engineering firm Kelly and Gruzen depict three massive residential towers and a modern marina.
One can almost imagine New Yorkers sipping cocktails on a sun-splashed terrace somewhere on the sprawling property.
But “Marina City, NYC” was never to be.
Fascinating! Looks very similar to the original plans for Battery Park City, which were designed by Kelly and Gruzen (later Gruzen Samton, now IBI Gruzen Samton). Only Gateway Plaza was built from this plan – the rest of BPC was redesigned under a red-brick master plan in the 1980s – but the similarity is striking.
