The next time you pass through Isham Park you’ll likely notice a stump where a massive Norway Maple used to stand.
Sadly, the towering giant was diseased and needed to come down. In true Inwood fashion, the tree felling quickly became a neighborhood event. As sawdust flew from up high, city workers and curious neighbors were given an impromptu lesson in tree surgery.
World champion tree climber Mark Chisholm gave a running commentary from a wireless microphone from his tree-top perch. Swinging from a rope, chainsaw in hand, Chisholm explained the obvious and not so obvious risks of his often hazardous trade.
Take a look.
did it make a sound?
From what I understand, it made a splash. The trunk was hollow and full of water.
I was noticing last Spring, while sitting on the benches across from the traffic circle on PTE that at least one of the trees looked hollow. Maybe it was this one.
I was noticing last Spring, while sitting on the benches across from the traffic circle on PTE that at least one of the trees looked hollow. Hope the Parks Dept. keeps an eye on these trees, or that residents report them, like I should have done. Next time back I’ll see if it’s still standing and if it appears dangerous, I will.
Thx for the video Cole and Mark. Good job!
Thank you for posting this very well done vide. We at STIHL would also like to thank the City of New York for pointing out this project. We enjoyed making this training opportunity available.
It really was a cool and informative demonstration. I’m glad I happened to be passing by. -Cole
I just saw the felled tree in the park, and wondered what had happened. Thanks for the report!
